Mazatlán is no longer one of the favorite tourist destinations for the people of Juarez; this is after the wave of violence that has hit the state of Sinaloa for approximately 3 months.
In this regard, Guadalupe N., sales coordinator of a local travel agency, said that for approximately 90 days there have been cancellations by people who had already purchased a package to this destination in the Mexican Pacific.
“We have registered many cancellations and several changes of destination by people who had already scheduled their trip to Mazatlán for these dates, because of the violence they prefer other different destinations,” said the interviewee.
She indicated that prior to the violent streak that is being experienced in that tourist destination, Mazatlán was the favorite beach for the people of Juarez to go on vacation.
Guadalupe N. indicated that this beach was one of the main ones chosen by the border residents due to its proximity and because there was a lot of accessibility to it through several commercial airlines.
She said that for three months now, travelers have been requesting to reschedule their vacations to the beach and have opted for other places such as Puerto Peñasco, Bahía de San Carlos and even Los Cabos in Baja California.
“Some people have preferred to travel to Manzanillo, Colima, Cancún, Puerto Vallarta and other destinations further south in the republic, perhaps people consider them a little safer than the beach in Mazatlán,” added Guadalupe N.
The port of Mazatlán, and the state of Sinaloa in general, has experienced a spate of violence in recent months, resulting from a dispute between two criminal groups, who seek to expand their territories and the areas for the sale of various drugs.
