Carso Group sold the rights to build the new cargo port for Mazatlán, which was planned to be built by 2024, at least the first stage, so it is time to contact and sit down to negotiate with the new group, said Javier Lizárraga Mercado.
The businessman and former Secretary of Economy in the state recognized that the current port is totally overwhelmed and also very urbanized around it, so if Mazatlán is to be among the most important ports in the country, a new one must be built.
“We move 50 thousand TEUs a year compared to 3 million in Manzanillo, 1.5 in Lázaro Cárdenas, one million in Veracruz, to give some examples (the new port) would cover between 4 to 8 million TEUs a year, today around 10 million TEUs a year are moved in the ports of San Pedro and Long Beach, California, 2, 3 million TEUs could easily come here, for the Northern Economic Corridor,” he said.
He explained that the new port would be double containerized with a saving of a thousand dollars per container, compared to the Port of Houston, which is the starting point for the entire eastern United States.
The new port would be 60 kilometers from Mazatlán to the north, near Dimas, San Ignacio.
“It would not be dredged, it would be piloted like the current new ports in the world, more than a million dollars have already been paid for studies, so we definitely know that this is the correct and adequate location, it would be a railroad that would finally connect with the mountains,” he said.
The construction area will be the gateway to the T-MEC Economic Corridor, not only a port, but also a railroad, he said.
