Cofepris and Areas of Protection against Health Risks launched an alert to 4 states, including Sinaloa, so that they do not allow recreational use of those 6 beaches

MAZATLAN.- The beaches of Rosarito and Tijuana, in Baja California; Linda and Escolleras, in Tapachula Chiapas; Olas Altas, in Mazatlán, Sinaloa; and El Bosque, in Centla, Tabasco are outside the ranges established by the World Health Organization (WHO) for recreational use.

This was reported by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks, Cofepris, which in coordination with the state Protection Areas against Sanitary Risks carried out sampling of 254 beaches in the country.

The six mentioned exceeded the maximum limits of 200 enterococci in 100 milliliters of water, in accordance with WHO guidelines.

He reported that with the objective of preventing health risks to national and foreign tourists, Cofepris and the state areas took and analyzed 2,047 seawater samples in 69 tourist destinations in 16 states, in search of the bacterium enterococcus faecalis.

It was added that in the four aforementioned entities it has already been agreed to implement sanitation actions to immediately achieve optimal conditions on the beaches and prevent health risks.

The goal of this review is to measure levels of the bacteria enterococcus faecalis, which can cause infections in humans.

Cofepris states that 98 percent of beaches are suitable for vacations

After studying 254 beaches, which translates into the analysis of 2,047 seawater samples in 69 tourist destinations in 16 states, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks Cofepris stated that 98 percent are suitable for recreational use.

Due to the recent damage caused by Hurricane Otis, 27 beaches in Guerrero could not be sampled. Specialists reported that when the sea is contaminated it can contain microorganisms typical of sewage.

These are bacteria that, in the case of enterococci, can cause gastroenteritis, diarrhea problems and abdominal pain, as well as salmonellosis, poisoning and severe skin conditions in minors and adults. In addition to these bacteria, fecal matter is contracted, intensifying its status as unfit for the public.
