The president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said on Saturday that the US government, led by Donald Trump, wants to “invest” in the construction of the Mayan Train , which will travel to the Mexican southeast.
At a rally in the southeastern state of Campeche, Lopez Obrador said that the Secretary of Commerce of the United States, Wilbur Ross, moved him “a message from President Trump that they are willing to invest and help to build the Mayan Train and other works in the southeast. ”
The Mexican president met with Ross this Friday at a summit of Mexican and American companies held in the Mexican city of Merida, capital of the state of Yucatan.
Precisely, Mérida and Campeche are two of the states through which the Mayan Train will pass, the star infrastructure work of López Obrador, which will also travel through the states of Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Chiapas to develop the impoverished southeast of Mexico.
“Now the southeast has priority, although they do not like it, I say it with all respect, elsewhere,” said the president, who said that this territory “was always abandoned” by the previous governments and “now it’s your turn”.
The construction of the Mayan Train, which will run 1,500 kilometers, requires an investment of between 120,000 and 150,000 million pesos (between 6,400 and 8,000 million dollars), assured López Obrador.
During his meeting in Campeche, Lopez Obrador said that only with the Mayan Train will already be invested 50,000 million pesos (2,700 million dollars) in this state, which is “an investment never seen in the history” of this entity.
As is usual in the acts carried out by López Obrador throughout the country, his followers booed the governor of the state, Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).
In response, López Obrador asked the attendees to “take a deep breath” and asked them: “Let’s see, what’s better, that we distance ourselves from the state government or act in a coordinated manner?”
The vast majority of people raised their hands in favor of the second option, something that López Obrador celebrated by exclaiming “we have to unite all of us”.
It is not the first time he has used the same technique, since at a rally in the state of Veracruz he asked the audience if he had to face Trump’s outbursts against Mexico, something that the public rejected.
