MAZATLAN. – A new Protected Natural Area in Sinaloa is added to the list, it is the area called Piaxtla-Tayoltita, which, starting in November, will be officially cataloged by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas.

The Secretary of Welfare and Sustainable Development, María Inés Pérez Corral, mentioned that this new ANP would cover the municipalities of San Ignacio, Sinaloa, and San Dimas, Durango, with an approximate area of 813,521 hectares, of which, about 422 1,811 are in Sinaloa.

“It was in the Morning Conference of the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, where it was explained that the country will have 22 new protected natural areas in 17 states. In Sinaloa, the proposal was to create the ANP in the category of ‘Piaxtla-Tayoltita’ Biosphere Reserve, which covers territory in the municipalities of San Ignacio, Sinaloa, and San Dimas, Durango.”

This area would become the largest protection area in Sinaloa, covering more than 7 percent of its territory, with the goal of being inaugurated next November, recognized nationally for its state of conservation and varied ecosystem that includes dry forest, medium jungle, oak forest, pine forest, mountain mesophyll forest and moors.

Pérez Corral pointed out that the establishment of ANP’s aims to preserve the natural environments of the different populations, communities, ecosystems, landscapes and most representative biogeographic provinces, as well as safeguard the genetic diversity of wild species on which evolutionary continuity depends.

“It is to ensure the preservation of species in danger of extinction, threatened, endemic and those that are subject to special protection, as well as the sustainable use of biodiversity and protect the natural environments of towns, areas and archaeological monuments, historical areas, as well as other areas of importance for the recreation, culture and identity of the inhabitants,” he said.

This would be the second ANP of the municipality of San Ignacio, remember that the first was the Meseta de Cacaxtla, located in the coastal area between this municipality and Mazatlán, concentrating the archaeological zone of Las Labradas, with vegetation ranging from the deciduous forest, the thorny jungle, hydrophilic vegetation, mangrove and riparian vegetation.

In June of this year, the area of Playa Espíritu in Escuinapa was also declared a Protected Natural Area, a coastal area that was accredited as such for its biodiversity.

What impact does having an ANP have?
