MAZATLAN.- A cargo ship that was docked at the fiscal dock of the port of Mazatlán began to sink last night and caused the mobilization of Municipal Civil Protection personnel.
The vessel, identified as Chiapas Star, has dozens of containers on board and had entered the port on Monday morning, from Manzanillo, Colima, and was destined for the state of Guerrero.
According to witnesses, the ship began to list to one side of the shipping channel around 10:00 p.m. and noises of metal and water were heard.
Municipal Civil Protection personnel went to the scene after the report, but the Administrator of the National Port System (ASIPONA) denied them access, arguing that they would take charge of the situation.
So far, the causes of the sinking and the condition of the crew are unknown. It has also not been reported if there is any environmental risk due to the possible spill of fuel or cargo.
ASIPONA has not issued any official statement regarding the incident. At first glance it can be seen that the ship is slightly inclined to one side of the navigation channel and that part of its structure is submerged in the water.
