Mayor Luis Guillermo Benítez Torres reported that not only one but several investors are asking about Mazatlán to install their mezcaleras.

MAZATLAN.- Can you locate the wine route in Ensenada, Baja California? The mayor of Mazatlán, Luis Guillermo Benítez Torres, is looking for something like this with the mezcal route.

This after the Ministry of Economy announced that Sinaloa could already sell agave with the mezcal label officially, among the four municipalities that obtained the appellation of origin are Mazatlán, Concordia, San Ignacio, and Rosario.

“A mezcal company is coming that is in the making and many more, they are looking for us for that issue. I instructed the Secretary of the Economy to create the Ruta del Mezcal, something similar to the Baja California wine route, to make it attractive and attract more tourists,” he declared.

Benítez Torres pointed out that this issue of selling mezcal in Mazatlan is attracting many investors, both local, national and foreign, as it will become that tourist plus for the destination, raising the characteristics that are sought to be promoted.

“It is in the construction of the mezcal companies, there are many mezcal companies that come, many investors attracted by this issue are arriving,” he said.

In October 2021, the federal government officially announced the denomination of origin of mezcal for the production of agave from 4 of the 18 municipalities of Sinaloa, modifying the General Declaration and Protection of the Mezcal Designation of Origin.

Now, in addition to Sinaloa, the use of the Designation of Origin for Mezcal includes regions of the states of Guerrero, Durango, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, and Oaxaca; Precisely Durango has shown interest in joining ties with Sinaloa, with twinning and now with mezcal.
