Mexican cuisine named one of the 10 best in the world

For Taste Atlas, the cochinita pibil from Yucatan is the best dish in the world.

They say that “there are no two like Mexico” and this phrase becomes especially relevant when talking about Mexican cuisine. We have all enjoyed a taco in the streets of Mexico City, we remember a memorable mole from Puebla or we have treated ourselves to a tlayuda from Oaxaca.

The delight caused by Mexican dishes has been recognized by Taste Atlas in its 2022 ranking. The portal specializing in gastronomy included Mexico in position 7 on the list of countries with the best cuisine in the world. In 2021, he had given it 5th place.

As outstanding dishes he names the tacos, mole, enchiladas, and lamb barbecue. Among the best products are zucchini, Oaxaca cheese, cajeta, and tree chili.

The number 1 in the classification was taken by Italy. Greece ranked second and Spain third. They were followed by Romania, France, and Japan.

The 10 countries with the best cuisine in the world

1. Italia.

2. Greece

3. Spain.

4. Rumania.

5. France.

6. Japan.

7. Mexico.

8. Croatia.

9. Portugal.

10. India.

Taste Atlas pointed out that the rating of each country is obtained by the average score of its 30 best dishes, drinks and food products. “Countries that are not on the list do not have enough qualified elements,” they note.

The controversy was immediate, as thousands of Twitter users were puzzled by the fact that Peruvian cuisine was ranked 32nd, behind Hungary, Algeria, El Salvador, Serbia and Chile.

The truth is that the world loves Mexican food. In 2021, Taste Atlas named the cochinita pibil from Yucatan the best dish in the world.

Cochinita pibil is a pork dish originating in the Yucatán. The pork is marinated in a combination of achiote paste, bitter orange juice, and garlic. It is slow-baked wrapped in banana leaves, then crumbled and served in tortillas, tacos, or on its own with shallots, pickled onions, salsa, and various roasted vegetables.

“This Mayan-influenced dish is most often served on weekends in many Mexican homes, usually as a Sunday family ritual,” they note by giving it a score of 4.6.

The pibil cochinita beat the Brazilian picanha and the Italian pesto. Other Mexican dishes that are included among the 100 best in the world are enmoladas (27) and wire (93).
