Semarnat calls celebrities against the Mayan Train “pseudo-environmentalists”
In the same vein as Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of Mexico, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) called the celebrities who demonstrated against the Mayan Train “pseudo-environmentalists”.
“Where were the pseudo-environmentalists when the real devastation began years ago in the southeast of Mexico?”, The agency begins in a statement, in which it indicates that the 4T works to remedy the socio-environmental disaster of the previous six-year terms.
He accused the artists of spreading erroneous data and misinformation, in addition to indicating “some serious situations of the last 30 years that have damaged the natural wealth of that region and that were not worthy of raising the voice of those who today boast as defenders of the environment”.
In an interview for a couple of national media, Eugenio Derbez, who participated in the “Sélvame del tren” campaign, argued that no one paid him or is partisan or against the 4T or the Train, if not against the change of route, which would cause irreversible ecocide.
In his list, he also criticized that in previous administrations “megaprojects and infrastructure works that severely damaged the environment were also authorized. The disorderly and exponential growth of tourism and real estate infrastructure in the state of Quintana Roo was allowed and even encouraged, without even proposing compensation measures to mitigate the impacts on the environment.
“Particularly in Cancún, Tulum, and Bacalar, where the consequences have ranged from the contamination and privatization of the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean and the poor management of solid waste and water to the exploitation of natural wealth, even within Protected Natural Areas”, Semarnat abounded.
And in contrast, he argued that in the current administration “the remediation of this socio-environmental disaster has begun, so we have launched actions, strategies, and programs that allow us to stop and counteract practices that threaten the environment and the population since We also promote tourism that respects nature and the communities that inhabit these places.”
