Mexico will send a military plane to evacuate Mexicans residing in Ukraine who are leaving that country for neighboring Romania, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard announced Friday.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador “has arranged for a special flight of the Mexican Air Force to be carried out to Romania to transport the families that we are evacuating from Ukraine and wish to be repatriated to our country,” Ebrard wrote on Twitter.
The first group of 22 Mexicans left this Friday by bus for the border with Romania, where they were expected by the ambassador in Bucharest, he said in another tweet.
“It was quite a negotiation that the owner of the bus did not cancel on them,” added Ebrard.
In images released by the Foreign Ministry, Mexicans, some with face masks and warm clothes to protect themselves from the cold, are seen about to board the bus that left Ivano-Frankivsk.
Diplomatic authorities are in contact with other Mexicans who want to leave the country after Russia launched a military offensive against Ukraine early Thursday.
The Mexican Foreign Ministry had registered a little more than 200 nationals residing in Ukraine. The first group of 32 was taken out of Kiev last week.
