The list of new ambassadors does not yet include the former Governor of Sinaloa, Quirino Ordaz Coppel, as Mexico’s ambassador to Spain.
Quirino Ordaz Coppel, proposed five months ago by President López Obrador, was not present at the ceremony.
According to an official statement from the Spanish government, the accredited ambassadors have been the representatives of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Christian Marc Biever; from the Republic of Finland, Sari Rautio; from the Arab Republic of Egypt, Yousef Diaeldin Mekkawy; of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Said Moussi; from the Republic of Indonesia, Muhammad Najib, and from the Republic of Armenia, Sos Avetisyan. The presentation of credential letters allows the full incorporation of the ambassadors to their allegations.
Letters of Credence are the document that certifies a foreign ambassador as the representative and highest diplomatic authority of another country in Spain. The delivery ceremony before the head of state dates back to the eighteenth century and has remained practically intact in its development to this day.
The ambassadors travel from the Santa Cruz Palace, the official headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, to the Royal Palace. The music band of the Royal Guard receives the ambassadors in the Armory Courtyard, interpreting the anthems of their respective countries. It is in the Official Chamber of the Royal Palace where the new ambassador presents the Letters of Credence before His Majesty the King.
The delay on the part of the Spanish government to grant the approval and make Ordaz Coppel an ambassador is located in the midst of differences between the Mexican and Spanish governments, given López Obrador’s demands that they apologize for the atrocities committed during the so-called conquest. and the viceroyalty.
At the end of 2021, the Spanish media El País announced that the Iberian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working on the process, so “it is only a matter of waiting”, as published on December 30.
However, this did not happen at the ceremony on January 13 at the Royal House, in which King Felipe VI received the credentials of six new ambassadors.
In September of last year, the López Obrador government thanked Ambassador María Carmen Oñate Muñoz and, since then, the Mexican diplomatic representation in Madrid has been without representation.
