The US extends the closure of the land border with Mexico and Canada until September 21

To minimize the spread of Covid-19, including the Delta variant, the US extended restrictions on non-essential travel until September 21

The United States announced this Friday a new extension of the closure of its land borders with Canada and Mexico, until September 21, to contain the expansion of the coronavirus, amid concern about the Delta variant

“To minimize the spread of Covid-19, including the Delta variant, the US is extending restrictions on non-essential travel at our land and sea crossings with Canada and Mexico until September 21,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.

He added that he works in coordination with medical and public health experts, as well as with his international partners to decide how to resume normal travel in a sustainable and safe way.

The decision contrasts with the one adopted by Canada at the beginning of the month, when Ottawa announced the reopening of its land borders to US citizens who are vaccinated with the complete guideline and present a negative test for Covid-19, after 17 months with border posts closed. to all trips considered non-essential.

The United States has closed its border crossings with Canada and Mexico since March 2020, despite progress in vaccination with almost 60% of its population over 18 years of age with the full schedule.

The US announced this week that it will begin to administer a booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine from next September 20, contrary to the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) it had requested a global moratorium on that measure.
