Flamingos smuggled out of Merida International Airport

MÉRIDA.- Profepa personnel, in coordination with elements of the National Guard stationed at the Mérida International Airport, stopped the shipment of three wooden boxes detected in a courier company, inside which there were six specimens of pink flamingo from Yucatán .

Unfortunately one of the birds died and five were recovered alive. The specimens show dehydration and cut wings.

The American flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber is listed in the category of threatened species within the Official Mexican Standard NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010.

PROFEPA initiated an administrative procedure, initiating the precautionary assurance of the boxes and the six copies, which were transferred to the Centennial Zoo.
