Two murders perpetrated against members of the LGBT+ community with extreme violence in Veracruz

Hate crimes against transgender people end the lives of Grettel and Erick in Veracruz.

22 homicides against members of the LGBTQIA community have been registered in Veracruz so far this year, according to activists.

Xalapa, Veracruz.- Two hate crimes marked the first weekend of October in Veracruz, both perpetrated against two members of the LGBT + community with extreme violence. Grettel who was fatally shot in the head; while Erick a transgender man, was found tied up and with signs of torture.

The most recent case is that of Erick “D”, who was known as “La Niño” among the inhabitants of Ciudad Isla, where he used to work in the pineapple fields of the region. According to statements from family and friends, the victim was 36 years old and was seen for the last time leaving his home to go to work in the same field where his body was found.

Local media announced that Erick lost his life on Sunday, October 4. His body showed signs of physical and sexual violence, in addition to injuries caused by a sharp object to the neck and other parts of the body; while his hands and feet were tied with cables.

After locating the body, agents of the Civil Force, Municipal and State Police arrived at the scene of the crime to cordon it off and plead the curious. Moments later, the victim’s parents went to the Servicio Médico Forense (SEMEFO) to identify the body.

The first hate crime committed this weekend in the state of Veracruz was against Gretell, a transgender woman who was shot while walking home in the municipality of Minatitlán.

The events occurred in the early hours of Saturday, October 3, when individuals aboard a motorcycle opened fire on the victim and managed to put a bullet in his head, the victim lost his life instantly.

Grettel was barely 35 years old and her killers are still fugitives from justice, unable to be identified.

Activists point out that so far this year, 22 members of the LGBTI + community have been murdered in Veracruz, which makes it the state with the highest incidence of hate crimes in the country.
