Progreso, Yucatan — Several foreigners, mostly Canadians, and Americans, were honored by Mayor Julián Zacarías Curi and Tourism Director Manuel Rosado Heredia for their altruistic work in the community.

Progreso’s Community Awards were handed to Speranza Avram for making scholarships available through the Progreso Apoyo Program; Dorothy Kaytor for also giving scholarships to children with her Chuburná School Support Program; and Kim Ray for offering scholarships with the Chelem Apoyo Escolar Program.

Also recognized were Sharon Helgason for her work at the Chicxulub food bank; David Wright for providing free digital resource courses to local businesses; Francois and Karen Cloutier, as well as Sallie Again-Hirst, for their work with the Chicxulub Soup Kitchen; Richard Long for providing school supplies to elementary students and Karen Cochrane for her work rescuing and sterilizing street dogs and cats.

In a speech, Zacarías thanked the volunteers for their presence and vowed that the city is working to make their stay in the port as enjoyable as possible. His comment that Progreso is improving little by little was met with applause.

A citizen assistance office for foreigners will be set up, attended by members of the expat community along with the City Council, he said.
