Mexican teens are one step away from being able to open bank accounts

The Chamber of Deputies sent to the Executive the reforms that it approved so that adolescents between 15 and 17 can open bank accounts.

With 462 votes in favor, zero against and zero abstentions, the deputies approved changes to the Credit Institutions Law and the Federal Civil Code so that adolescents over 15 and under 18 can open bank accounts.

The initiative was presented by Deputy Patricia Terrazas Baca, of the National Action Party (PAN), who promoted amendments to Article 59 of the Credit Institutions Law so that young people under 18 can open bank deposit accounts, through legal representatives, and can dispose of their money without the intervention of an adult.

It was considered necessary to provide tools to working minors so that they receive salaries and manage them themselves.

In the event that the Executive to whom the approval was sent is specified, Banco de México will be in charge of determining the characteristics, level of transactionality, limitations, requirements, terms, and conditions of the aforementioned accounts.

Terrazas Baca highlighted the importance of the initiative. “The inclusion of adolescents in the financial system is a positive development for a segment of the population that increases their social and economic participation every day.”

At the end of his participation, he pointed out that the Finance and Public Credit Commission presents the opinion to support the youth of Mexico who are an essential column for the growth of the country.
