Pirates in the Gulf of Mexico have intensified their actions this year.

From January to September the International Federation of Transport Workers (ITF) reported 16 monthly assaults on merchant ships in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche and Dos Bocas, Tabasco.

The monthly average of ship robberies in 2018 was 12 cases, while in 2017 it was only 4 cases per month.

Just last Monday, the Italian ship ‘Rema’, provider of platforms and with a load capacity of 2 thousand 600 tons, was assaulted by pirates on the coasts of Campeche.

Two elements of the crew were injured, one with a bullet and the other with blows to the head.

“This has already generated an international alert, due to the effects on trade. Pirates are increasingly ravaging ships, ”said Enrique Lozano, ITF inspector for Latin America.
