Cancun, Q.R. — One policeman died and another remains seriously injured after they were shot while performing surveillance patrols on motorcycles in a residential area of Cancun.
The incident happened around 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning in the La Joya Fractionation in SM 254 of Cancun. Residents who witnessed the attack made the report and called emergency services for help. A Red Code was issued in Cancun as police responded to the call.
When they arrived, they found two of their fellow officers had been shot. They were laying in the street beside their motorcycles. They were placed inside a patrol car and transferred to hospital, however, one of the officers died. The second remains in serious condition.
Witness reports say the two officers were ambushed by subjects aboard an SUV. As the officers neared the vehicle, that inside opened fire. One of the officers was hit in the head.
Chief of Police, Alberto Capella, released a statement that 28-year-old Albin Iván López Valenzuela died after being hit with bullets. The second officer, 33-year-old José L.C. remains in serious condition. The Secretary of Public Security of Quintana Roo confirmed “their sadness and outrage” for the death of police officer Albin Iván López Valenzuela.
“It is with deep sadness and outrage I report the death of our partner Albin Ivan López Valenzuela who was cowardly attacked along with his partner after 11 hours in Benito Juárez. I guarantee that we will find those responsible.”
The Government of Quintana Roo, through la Secretaría de Seguridad Pública, is offering a reward of one million peso for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for the shooting of the officers.
“The vehicle and the weapon are allegedly related to the attack on our partners today and for whose information we offer 1,000,000.00 (one million pesos) for any relevant data reported to the ANONYMOUS complaint number 089. We will take care of the identity of the person who informs us”, he said.
