IATA considered that in Mexico, due to its orographic elevation, it is more difficult to operate three airports, so technical problems must be assessed and resolved.

The start-up of having an airport system based on three terminals, as planned by the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will be more complicated than having a single complex from where to operate the various airlines, affirmed the Vice President of Security and Air Operations of the International Air Transport Association ( IATA), Gilberto López Meyer.

Airspace will always be more complicated when you have three to two terminals or four to three, but there are examples in the world that can be done, but it has to be done well, said the former head of the General Directorate of Aeronautics. Civil ( DGAC ) in the periods from 2003 to 2008 and 2014 to 2015 during the work of the Annual General Meeting of IATA.

The López Obrador airport system plan intends to jointly operate the Mexico City International Airport ( AICM ), the Toluca terminal and have a new complex at the Santa Lucia military base.

“It is complicated, always has been, in any part of the world volumes of flights of this magnitude are very complicated air spaces. In Mexico, because of the orographic elevation, they are more difficult, but they are technical problems that must be assessed and resolved, “explained López Meyer.

The vice president of Security and Air Operations of IATA said that the way in which the system of three airports can be implemented is based on technology and operation designs. “Fortunately, modern aircraft have more navigation resources that allow more precision in navigation,” said Gilberto López Meyer.
