‘Let’s close ranks,’ says Meade in the face of Trump’s threat with tariffs on Mexico

José Antonio Meade, ex-candidate for president of the PRI, said that “the sovereignty and dignity of Mexico has never been and should not be subject to negotiation.”

The former presidential candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Jose Antonio Meade, called on Thursday to close ranks before the threat of US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on all Mexican products.

“In the face of the threat of @ realDonaldTrump let’s close ranks, Mexico’s sovereignty and dignity has never been and should not be subject to negotiation, all the support, Trump will believe that making Americans pay more for their imports from Mexico will solve the problem of migration? “Meade tweeted.

Earlier this Thursday, the US president imposed tariffs starting at 5 percent from June 10 on all products imported from Mexico, in retaliation because he believes that the country does not redouble its efforts to stop migrants arriving in its territory.

“The passive cooperation of Mexico to allow this massive incursion (of illegal migration) constitutes an emergency and an extraordinary threat to national security and the economy of the United States,” Trump said in a statement issued by the White House.

Tariffs will remain, he said, until the flow of illegal migrants passing through Mexico is stopped, and he also threatened to increase them gradually “until the problem of illegal migration is solved.”
