Mexicos Federal Consumer Protection Agency “Profeco” unveils a list of 10 brands of tuna that use soy without warning consumers

The Federal Attorney’s Office ( Profeco ) announced that it found that  18 presentations of tuna, from ten different brands, contain from 1 percent and up to 62 percent of soy  “Without the consumer being informed of the amount thereof”.

In a statement, the Profeco announced that a total of 57 canned tuna presentations marketed in the market were reviewed, and found in 18 of them soy content in the product.

While in El Dorado yellowfin tuna in oil, Profeco found that it has between 21 and 44 percent soy in its drained mass.

He also found that in yellowfin tuna in oil from the Chedrahui brand, 23 to 28 percent soy is used.

The study also found that three products contain less drained mass and 3 products have less net content, thus failing to comply with NOM-002-SCFI-2011, Prepackaged Products-Net Content-Tolerances and verification methods.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The Profeco recommended consumers “when buying tuna packaged carefully read the label, review the ingredients on the label to identify if the product contains soy, verify the expiration date and not consume packaging with any alteration and unpleasant texture.”

He also recalled that tuna cans should be kept in places free of moisture and away from high temperatures. As well as if the product is not consumed in its entirety, store it in a clean and refrigerated container.
