The mayor, Renán Barrera Concha, received from the hands of the President of the Republic, Enrique Peña Nieto, the recognition ceremony that was held at the Banamex Center in Mexico City.
The Index of Prosperous Cities jointly carried out by UN-Habitat and Infonavit, allows to manage policies according to the needs and conditions detected in the cities.
It also evaluates six aspects in each of the localities: productivity, infrastructure, quality of life, equity and social inclusion, environmental sustainability, governance, and urban legislation.
Barrier Concha stressed in a statement that in addition to the economic aspect, there was an advance in the environmental aspect and work is already underway to make it become a sustainable city in a short time.
The executive director of UN-Habitat, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, delivered the full document of the study to President Peña Nieto and the latter in turn gave a symbolic representation of three cities, including Mérida.
In addition to the mayors of the cities included in the measurements, the Secretaries of Foreign Affairs, Luis Videgaray, and Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development Rosario Robles Berlanga attended the event.
