Sheinbaum Says Allegations Against Morena Figures in Sinaloa Will Not Hurt Party Ahead of 2027 Elections
President Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed the idea that allegations of alleged links to organized crime involving members of Morena in Sinaloa will negatively affect the party’s electoral prospects ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election. She argued that multiple opinion polls continue to place Morena at the top of voter preferences in the state.
“Everyone can have their opinions, but sometimes what matters are the polls—what people say about one party or another,” Sheinbaum said on Monday.
During her morning press conference, the president presented a poll in which respondents were asked:
“If the election for governor were held today, which party would you vote for?”
According to the survey:
- Morena: 38%
- Undecided voters: 36%
- PRI: 10%
- PAN: 8%
Sheinbaum’s remarks came after Ricardo Monreal, Morena’s leader in the Chamber of Deputies, acknowledged that the narrative portraying the party as a “narco-party” has negatively affected public support.
In April, the United States government identified 10 politicians from Sinaloa over alleged ties to organized crime. Among those mentioned were:
- Governor Rubén Rocha Moya
- Former Sinaloa Secretary of Administration and Finance Enrique Díaz Vega
- Senator Enrique Inzunza
Sheinbaum emphasized that her administration does not protect anyone accused of criminal wrongdoing and that legal action is taken whenever there is evidence.
“First of all, we do not protect or cover for anyone, because that is what has been claimed. If the Attorney General’s Office or the Security Cabinet has evidence that a public official is colluding with organized crime, then legal action is taken,” she said.
Government Says Video Threatening Monreal Is Not Authentic
Addressing a video circulating online in which a criminal organization allegedly threatens Zacatecas Governor David Monreal over supposed agreements with the group, Sheinbaum said the Security Cabinet had analyzed the footage and concluded that it is not authentic.
“It is not a real video. Even the voice does not match what the person is supposedly saying. Nevertheless, it is being investigated, but that is what the Security Cabinet informed us,” the president stated.
