NEW YORK, NY — Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel and one of Mexico’s most notorious drug kingpins, entered a guilty plea in a United States federal court on July 6, 2026.

Appearing before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, the aging cartel leader finalized the plea following international media speculation regarding his legal strategy. As part of the proceedings, the court confirmed that Zambada will be permitted to receive specialized medical attention for his ongoing health conditions while serving his sentence.

Zambada’s defense team specifically requested that his confinement conditions differ significantly from those of his former partner, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera. Guzmán is currently serving a life sentence under strict isolation at the ADX Florence maximum-security prison in Colorado—conditions his legal team has repeatedly described in letters as “dehumanizing.”

The historic plea marks a definitive end to the criminal career of one of the cartel’s original architects. Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her administration will soon present an official report regarding the circumstances of Zambada’s capture, while continuing to question the unilateral actions of U.S. authorities in the operation.
