Starting Thursday morning, Mazatlán residents are paying 13 to 15 pesos for public transportation in the city, the new fare set by state authorities and transportation companies, which hadn’t been adjusted in 45 months.
However, for commuters, the service hasn’t improved, as the buses are dirty, and even during the first few hours of service, they are still littered with trash from the previous day.
One passenger on the Valles del Ejido route, heading downtown to work, was surprised by the new price, but what really angered her was the filth she found under the seat.
Other domestic workers said they were taken by surprise by the new fare, but understand that it’s a consequence of the price of diesel.
Therefore, in the middle of Holy Week, when travel in the port is massive, the new fare came as a breath of fresh air for the transportation companies, but for the working class, it’s a blow to their wallets.
Transportation companies had requested new fares due to the high cost of diesel and spare parts, which prevented them from maintaining their vehicles while maintaining the current fare.
Transportation to rural communities will also see a fare increase starting Sunday, April 5.
The transportation companies announced the new fares through social media and on their buses.
The bus companies that have announced this adjustment are Autotransportes Concordia SA de CV; Sociedad Cooperativa Río Presidio; Autotransportes Rojos de Concordia; and Autobuses Regionales Los Halcones SA de CV.
This increase also comes in addition to the fare hike for urban buses in Mazatlán, where buses with air conditioning will cost 15 pesos, those without air conditioning 13 pesos, and students will continue to receive the discounted fare of 3.5 pesos.
Here are the new fares:
13 pesos
Buses without air conditioning (previously 11 pesos)
15 pesos
Buses with air conditioning (previously 12.50 pesos)
3.50 pesos
Student fare (no change)
