A total of 16 patients from a rehabilitation center in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, agreed to leave with armed men who “invited” them to work, confirmed the state Public Security Secretariat.
In a press conference, the secretary of public security, Gerardo Mérida Sánchez, pointed out that these people left of their own free will, so they can only report it to the competent authorities.
“There was a movement by people inside the rehabilitation center, there were 16 elements who voluntarily agreed to follow a group of subjects who asked for support, who wanted them to accompany them to work with them, it really is positive, there were 16,” said the state secretary.
According to El Debate, the rehabilitation center is called Permanecer. “It is regrettable that some people decide for a situation, let’s say as a possibility, that they carry out their activities outside the law, in this situation, then a follow-up will have to be carried out,” said Mérida Sánchez.
This fact occurs hours after the governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, assured that the city of Mazatlán was “shielded” against violence as occurs in Culiacán.
During the Semanera conference, Rocha Moya pointed out that there have been “advances” in security issues, highlighting the arrival of Omar García Harfuch to the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection.
“There are no murders in Mazatlán. No… when… in these days… we are talking about the fact that the… Effectively… we have Mazatlán shielded so that events do not occur,” he added in the conference.
The governor was questioned after violent events were recorded at the port of Mazatlán over the weekend: on Saturday, December 7, a man was shot a few meters from the boardwalk; while on Sunday six young people were deprived of their freedom by an armed group.
Culiacán completed three months of violent events caused by the Los Chapitos and Los Mayos factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, who since September 9 declared war on each other after the surrender to the US authorities of Ismael El Mayo Zambada García, former leader of the criminal organization.
El Mayo was deceived, kidnapped and finally taken to the United States by his godson Joaquín Guzmán López, son of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán Loera, the other co-founder of the cartel.
Data from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) consulted by Infobae Mexico, Sinaloa registered 510 homicides between September 9 and December 8, 2024.
