This year, the flow of migrants through Mazatlán has been reduced by 75 percent, said Father Rafael Martínez. The director of the Caritas Foundation of Mazatlán explained that the star program is the “Albergue al Peregrino” (Pilgrim Shelter), where they care for around 16 migrants a month.
“The flow has been greatly reduced, but it has not stopped. What is striking is that entire families pass through; before it was adult men, then women and now children, the entire family,” he said.
He explained that this program of support for migrants from Caritas offers people who pass through Mazatlán on their way north a place to sleep, food and other basic services such as clothing, medical care or bathrooms.
The priest announced that the Javieran sisters are about to arrive, which is the female family of the ICO parents and will stay in the facilities of Caritas Mazatlán. “They will be here in Mazatlán and we are in contact with them, and they also care for migrants; there are four Xavierian nuns who will arrive,” she said.
Medical care
She recalled that the association has 14 programs to help the most unprotected people, among which are health care in terms of medical consultation, dentistry, clinical analysis laboratory and pharmacy.
“Satisfactory care because health professionals have joined medicine; we have a pediatrician, traumatologist and specialized people who enter the institution as volunteers to provide service to people,” she concluded.
