MAZATLÁN.- The Secretary of Municipal Public Security, Jaime Othoniel Barrón Valdés, confirmed that the State Attorney General’s Office is investigating 170 municipal police officers for different crimes committed against citizens in Mazatlán.

This after, a few days ago, three elements of the Mazatlán Municipal Police were linked to criminal proceedings for assaulting two journalists in October 2021 on Pinitos beach.

The crimes under investigation that involve the elements of the Secretariat of Public Security and Municipal Transit are extortion, torture, abuse of authority, illegal deprivation of liberty, commercial robbery and house robbery.

The secretary explained that, despite being under investigation, the elements continue to work, since evidence is needed to prove their participation in said crimes.

Only 10 elements are suspended, while the others are still in operation. However, the complaints received are closely monitored, he said.

Barrón Valdés emphasized that the suspicious elements are being observed, but they will wait for the investigation procedures to conclude to determine whether they are guilty of the crimes indicated before and take definitive actions.

“The elements are not quickly separated from duty during the investigation, since they have the right to be subjected to an adequate investigation,” said the municipal official.

The secretary also highlighted that the police elements have received training given by the State Human Rights Commission, with the aim of promoting and guaranteeing the human rights of citizens, as well as to act in accordance with the law in situations that involve the participation of Public Safety.
