Oaxaca de Juárez.— The Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) announced that a decree will be published in which two sanctuaries will be created so that sea turtles can nest protected on Oaxaca beaches.

The beaches where the sanctuaries will be developed are: La Escobilla and Chacahua, which are already considered the favorites for turtles to lay their eggs.

This Semarnat project is part of the 17 sanctuaries that will be erected in Mexico, in an area of 1,767.21 hectares.

These sanctuaries will be distributed on beaches in Sinaloa (2), Jalisco (4), Michoacán (3), Guerrero (2), Oaxaca (2), Chiapas (1), Quintana Roo (1), Tamaulipas (1) and Yucatán ( 1).

According to official information from the agency, the objective is to “stop the illegal trade in sea turtle eggs and meat, which has been increasing in recent years.”

The agency highlighted that in the last 17 years 35 million nests have been protected and 650 million hatchlings have been released thanks to the National Program for the Conservation of Sea Turtles.
