With two goals from Gonzalo Sosa, Mazatlán FC beat the tournament champion Atlas 1-2 at the start of Day 14 of Clausura 2022. Mazatlan FC, with eight games without being able to win, beat the Liga MX champion in its own house.
At minute 30, with an early corner kick, Mazatlán striker Gonzalo Sosa went up on the scoreboard. After Marco Fabián’s pass, the Argentinian player sent the ball to the far post.
Twelve minutes later, the first half was about to end and in another corner kick, the Mazatlan Cañoneros extended their advantage with a second header inside the area: Gonzalo Sosa’s second score of the day.
The Atlas fans in Jalisco could not believe it, the penultimate place in the stands was beating the Mexican soccer champion with clear dominance.
At minute 51, the Atlas would appear on the scoreboard, with controversy, but they closed the gap against a surprising Mazatlan team. Accidentally, the ball collided with the arm of Jefferson Intriago and the referee did not hesitate to call a penalty kick, which Atlas star Julio Furch would make valid.
The Argentine attacker kept Atlas alive, but at 81′, he himself would kill those hopes of the equalizer with his expulsion for a hard tackle on Mazatlan’s defensive player Brian Rubio.
So Mazatlan FC surprised its fans with a tremendous win against the current champion.
