According to the Summer Market Study, Mexico City is already the main source of tourism to Mazatlán, with 19 percent of total visitors to the destination, followed by Chihuahua with 17 and Durango with 10 percentage points.
For this reason, the Municipal Government, through the Ministry of Economic Development, Tourism and Fisheries, signed a letter of commitment to establish a collaboration agreement with the Mexican Association of Travel Agencies of Mexico City, in order to promote and sell touristically Mazatlán through all its members.
In the framework of the end-of-year dinner at the AMAV-CDMX, chaired by Julian Arroyo, Ricardo Velarde Cárdenas, head of the Sedectur, presented the Mazatlán product, highlighting the renewal and growth of the destination in recent years, especially during the two recent ones, with everything and the challenges that the pandemic has implied.
Negotiations began there so that the 2022 Assembly of the AMAV-CDMX, scheduled for the month of June, is held in Mazatlán, so Sedectur will work hand in hand with hotel associations and other organizations linked to the tourism sector, for it.
Velarde Cárdenas reported that it will be no later than next February when the association’s board of directors travel to Mazatlán to formalize the agreement, with the signature of Chemist Benitez Torres.

Chilango, derogatory word
According to the researcher and academic, in principle, it appeared as an adjective to refer in a pejorative way to those who lived in the capital, formerly the Federal District.

Lara Ramos explained that there are two types of demonym to refer to certain inhabitants of a region, known as cult and colloquial.

He recalled that before the Federal District became Mexico City, the word defeño was used as a gentilicio.
“It was in use for a long time while it was the Federal District, but it is in the process of disappearing because it is already a City State. And there comes another debate about what the name would be: There is one that has no possibility of success, it was invented by the Mexican Academy of Language, which is from Mexico. They invented it about 10 years ago, but I have not seen it circulate ”, he added.
Capitalino versus chilango
The director of the Dictionary of Spanish Dictionary in Mexico assures that capital is the most suitable term to refer to those who inhabit the city.
“I am in favor of him being from the capital, for one reason: we are going to suppose that in Sonora, someone from Álamos says: I am going to the capital. Nobody is going to understand that they are going to Hermosillo, which is the capital of Sonora, they are going to understand that they are coming to Mexico City. For the entire country, the capital is the city, although legally each state has its capital. That means that we from the capital are the inhabitants of the city ”, he explained.

Chilango as self-affirmation
The academic pointed out that there are those who use chilango to challenge the pejorative use of the word and assert themselves.
“ Chilango is first of all contemptuous, as it happens with many of these contemptuous forms, it is that someone takes them to assert himself. The one who says yes, I’m from Chilango and what. That has caused many people to use chilango as a name for Mexico City. They are very common processes: the word that begins as derogatory, but for a self-affirmation, is adopted to show others that they have no reason ”.
