The city council of San Cristobal de las Casas, in charge of the Morenoist mayor Jernima Toledo Villalobos, will be investigated by Profepa.
CHIAPAS: For decorating with plants in danger of extinction a part of the center of the Magical Town of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, the City Council, in charge of the Morenista mayor Jernima Toledo Villalobos, will be investigated by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa).
On November 11, the agency issued a response to citizen Efrain Orantes Abadia, who -protected by article 420, section IV, of the Crimes against the Environment and Environmental Management chapter of the Federal Criminal Code- who went days before to demand an investigation and, therefore, the punishment of those responsible.
At the beginning of December, the municipal authorities, but especially the Secretary of the Environment of that town in the Altos region, invited the citizens to visit the decorations (among Christmas trees and the birth of Jesus Christ ) placed on one side of the Cathedral, in the heart of the San Cristobal de las Casas.
However, the use of vegetation, such as moss in different varieties and other protected plants that are even part of the Original Mexican Standard, generated criticism for what was considered ecocide.
For this reason, Profepa, after issuing the official number PFPA / 14.7 / 2C.28.2 / 00127-20 promoted by Abadia and addressed to the municipal authorities, corresponding sanctions could apply for the possession, transportation, and extraction of protected flora species.
Among the arguments used by the complainant, a biologist by profession stands out that the current administration could not verify, with a document in hand that would support the extraction of these types of plants.
Based on the same law on the matter, the complainant predicted that this type of action will not go unpunished and that the punishments for this type of practice entail, such as jail, reparation of the damage, and a fine.
So far, no authority from the San Cristobal de Las Casas City Council has issued a position on this case, although it is expected to do so in the next few hours or days.
