Two environmentalists were physically and verbally attacked by litterers on the beach at Chuburna Puerto, according to local media.

Liliana Zenteno and Dorian Roncin told Reporters Hoy that a group of beachgoers was angered after being told to pick up beer cans and other trash left on the sand.

The incident was reported at 6 p.m. Sunday.

“For the first time in eight months that we started traveling through Mexico, something like this happens,” said Roncin, who is of French origin and was nursing a cut on his left eyebrow.

“We dialed the Progreso police and they arrived in uniform onboard a patrol, but they did not want to arrest the people because they had children with them,” he said. It was not clear if the beachgoers were cited by police.

One of the women who was with the tourists who attacked Dorian affirmed that “it was her land and that she threw the garbage wherever she wanted,” said Roncin.

The couple documents their journeys on the Aventura Somos Leyenda Facebook page, but has been living in Chuburna since the coronavirus contingency began. While there, they’ve decided to help protect sea turtle eggs from humans.

“After four months people are starting to come back, and just as there are those who do have a conscience and collect what they consume, others throw away their garbage without caring about the damage to the ecosystem,” he said.
