The Secretary of the Interior, Olga Sánchez Cordero, informed that the Mexican government is getting ready for the arrival of a new migrant caravan that could be organized in Honduras and assured that, as in other cases, they will be allowed to stay in Mexico legally if they wish, but it will be prohibited that they only want to cross into another country.
“We have news, through social networks, that a new caravan is being called in Honduras. The government is open to being a country of hospitality, refuge, and migrants who wish to stay to work and even have (benefits of) social programs, welcome, but those who want Mexico to be only a transit country, we do not accept that
” She argued that Mexico returned to the historical figures of illegal immigrants, which was 60 thousand, although she admitted that it had skyrocketed up to 144 thousand when there were migrant waves.
“What has always been done, unlike previous administrations, is to give them (benefits of) social programs.”
She recalled that the National Guard has a strong and express mandate to guarantee decent treatment to migrants, but also the security of borders, particularly in the south of the national territory.
At a press conference, he said that the National Guard is not only deployed for containment, but also in areas where there is a greater incidence of crime, such as Guanajuato and Tamaulipas.
The official also announced that 2019 broke a record in the number of immigration procedures of foreigners in our country, with 486 thousand 652, and it is estimated that they will increase to 505 thousand at the end of this year, which represents the highest figure in five years.
“In this first year of management, the immigration authority registered 537 thousand 699 foreign people residing in national territory, 58 percent more than the 338 thousand 901 of the year 2015. Of that population, 77 thousand people are of American origin and 47 thousand of Venezuelan and Honduran nationalities.
“276 people caught in flagrancy, who transferred foreigners on condition of irregular stay in national territory, have been made available in the various state attorney general offices,” she added.
In addition, more than 65 vehicles were insured, including freight trucks, tourist buses and private cars in which migrants were transported.
Sánchez Cordero said that the National Institute of Migration has a record of 207 thousand repatriated Mexican people, from the United States and Canada, in the period from December 2018 to November 2019, of which 12 thousand 61 are minors.
Among the entities with the greatest number of repatriated persons are Guerrero, Oaxaca, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Chiapas, Veracruz, Puebla, State of Mexico, Jalisco and Chihuahua; Of these, only 4.43 percent had no academic instruction and only 0.12 percent had no work experience.
