MAZATLÁN.- For the first time, the Mazatlecos will have the opportunity to face face to face with an animal they could never see, but who know that they lived with the human being, with the exhibition «Mamut, the giant of Prehistory», in the Archaeological Museum of Mazatlan.
The skeleton sample of the giant mammal that was located in Ecatepec, State of Mexico, will be in the enclosure from Friday, May 17 and will end on July 26.
Thursday morning, Sixto Osuna Street, between Venus and Venustiano Carranza, had to be closed for about three hours for the unloading of huge boxes that contain 80 percent of the skeleton of the “Mamut de Ecatepec” and the structure that will support it during the exhibition.
Gibran de la Torre, in charge of the Museum of the National Institute of Anthropology and History, said that thanks to the efforts of INAH, the INAH Sinaloa Center, the City Council headed by Mayor Luis Guillermo Benítez Torres, and the Commission of Social and Cultural Action of Cabildo, this exhibition could be brought to the port.
“To see this type of remains, of remains, of exhibitions, you have to travel to the big cities (…) They are very specific exhibitions, and you have to be very lucky to visit this type of exhibition,” said the anthropologist.
The remains of the mammoth were located in 1996, during the construction of a cistern in Ecatepec de Morelos, State of Mexico.
This specimen is estimated to have an approximate weight of 10 tons and its age is 10 thousand 500 years; the skeleton, rescued and restored by 80 percent, weighs around two and a half tons and during the exhibition reaches a height of four meters in height.
