Where it rains stars
A trip to the Zone of Silence, Baggins of Mapimí.
One of the natural spectacles with the capacity to leave you speechless is the shower of stars of the Leonids in the Zone of Silence. Just being in a place where electric light does not exist, turning to the sky and seeing an infinity of stars covering the sky, is something unique and that goes beyond words. On this occasion we want to share a travel proposal to enjoy this show, you just need a good jacket and an internal “yes” to leave your comfort zone.
The season
November is the month where you can clearly see the shower of stars from Las Leonidas. This shower of stars is one of the most colorful and in a place so far from the city you can appreciate it in all its splendor. It is totally worth the trip, because the sky is covered with stars where you look and there will come a time where you will surely not need the light of your lamp to guide you, you will feel like the first inhabitants of the world! If you visit the area this season, you have to wear clothes to protect yourself from the cold because at night the temperatures drop to 0 ° and above.
Where is it and how to get there?
Leaving Monterrey, travel on the road to Saltillo and continue on the road to Torreón towards the city of Jiménez, Chihuahua. You have two options to get, toll road or free; if you travel by the first one, deviate towards the ejido La Flor approximately at kilometer 127, and if you travel by the second one, take the deviation at the height of the town Ceballos. The travel time is 6 hours, depending on road conditions.
ACTIVITIES
With these landscapes, night photography is definitely the activity to do in this area.
Prepare the camping
You can choose between camping or sleeping in the rooms. The camping option is much cheaper and also adds that flavor of adventure to the occasion, yes, prepare to feel the intense cold at night; a tent of 4 seasons will relieve your sorrows. The rooms are practically new and are excellent for people with physical pains that could prevent them from sleeping on the floor.
Full belly, happy photographer
Nothing like a good guisadito, accompanied with handmade corn tortillas and a cafesito pot to fill the belly and start all the activities of the day. The ejidatarias of La Flor prepare the food at the moment: we can not describe the flavor of the fresh cheese or the flour tortillas or the chocolate shells because simply … our mouths water!
Walk at sunset
Start by exploring the paths allowed within the Bag of Mapimí. One of the most tranquil and feasible walks part of the camping area towards a mountain that stands out in the middle of the plain. Along the way you will find a bit of the great wealth that the Zone of Silence has in terms of flora and fauna, so be very careful with each step! At the top, the show is wonderful: the sky is painted in all the shades of orange, yellow, red, purple and pink, with the sun in the background hiding on the horizon. Take the opportunity to take your camera and practice photography of sunsets, or simply sit and contemplate and feel the peace of the landscape.
Marvel
If you thought that’s all, wait, because the sunset is hardly an appetizer. As the sun goes down, the sky darkens and the first stars begin to emerge. In the first few minutes the sky will be as starry as can be seen in a metropolis, and in the early hours of the night begin to glimpse the clouds of stars that literally cover the entire sky. Wherever you look, there will be stars, and in a coincidence of your look and the world, you will see a shooting star.
Have fun: Flashlight painting
You can take advantage of the early hours of the night to practice flashlight painting . This activity requires making patterns with LED lights in front of a camera. The exposure time is longer, so the light trail will be recorded in the image. You can invite your family or friends to create a composition of light, the results are very funny.
Mythology and constellations
Nothing like imitating the first human civilizations in their contemplation of the sky and the stars. From this observation arises the classification of stars as constellations and their names reflect attributes of human beings towards a distant reality that in ancient times seemed impossible to achieve.
Night photography all night
Get ready with your camera, a tripod and a good jacket to take pictures all night. Star photos require a longer exposure to capture their movement; Although this implies time and attitude to hold awake, the results are very worthwhile.
Museums
Within the ejido there is a museum with an explanation of the flora and fauna of the region. You will also find interesting information about the Zone of Silence and about the surrounding ejidos. A little bit of history to enrich our knowledge of this part of the country.

Special for a car tour and recommended to take the whole family. It is necessary that the vehicle is in excellent condition, as well as having all the caution and attention to travel especially in these kilometers of the road. The road has two lookouts and in some sections has spaces on its sides, special to park the vehicle without any danger and get off to take a picture with the landscape of the ravines of the Sierra de Durango.
Mirador Buenos Aires
Known as the Port of Buenos Aires and located 11 kilometers away from Mexiquillo, this viewpoint has a special view of the ravines of the Sierra de Durango. If you pay attention you will notice three peaks in the mountains that, according to the villagers, are three friars who are walking on the mountain.
Mirador del Espinazo
Originally this part of the road emerged from a cart where you could cross the sierra between a space of 4 to 5 meters on one of the most dangerous and high slopes in the country, thus giving rise to its name, El Espinazo del Diablo. It is currently one of the best viewpoints of the entire road system that exists in the country, from where you can see both sides of the road and the ravines with one of the deepest falls in all of Mexico.
