Vacation rentals continue to grow as a new and attractive option for short-stay lodging, despite the deficit and other factors that have worked against them over the past five years, highlighted entrepreneur Cristina Velarde.

Just as tourism has grown worldwide over the past 10 years, she said vacation rentals are also growing as a profitable business.

“It’s a growing industry, and the trend toward vacation rentals—arriving in an apartment to enjoy a different experience—is also growing.”

Velarde emphasized that the sun rises for everyone, that tastes vary widely, and that some people are looking for a different experience than a hotel.

The developer stated that with all the urban infrastructure and tourism available, Mazatlán, with vacation rentals in the last year, has had an occupancy of 139 nights per year, which is 38 percent of capacity, contributing 200,000 pesos per year, making it an attractive and profitable business.

“We’re talking about an apartment rent ranging from around 1,500 to 1,600 pesos per night. If you multiply that, roughly, it gives you an income of 200,000 pesos a year.”

Obviously, she specified that this can vary depending on the location.

“If the apartment is in better condition, we’re seeing that it’s an attractive and profitable business, and one that Mazatlán will thrive in for much longer.”

The real estate entrepreneur and former president of AMPI Mazatlán also highlighted Mazatlán’s growth in investments in Logistics Parks and shopping malls, and the importance of being regulated in terms of tax payments, verifications, and certifications to make the sector more credible and for developers to have solid foundations.

She also spoke about sustainability in new developments, preserving the environment so as not to compromise future generations.
