Women shrimp packers are desperate, as they have been unemployed since December and have difficulty bringing income to their homes.
The leader of the cooperative, Elva Espain, said that there are around 320 women who are desperate due to the lack of employment in this high seas fishing season.
She said that they have already been out of work for more than a month due to the low production brought by the few boats that are still working on fishing.
“The season was useless, it was super low, the boats did very badly, they brought in little shrimp. There are few boats that are fishing, but they are not doing very well,” she said.
Espain said that due to the lack of employment they have focused on managing support through the State Government, but this request has not been attended to, since the authority attends to those affected by the cold.
She acknowledged that this season has been the worst in history for shrimp catches, which has repercussions on the 320 women who are dedicated to this activity.
She recalled that this harvest of 10 freezers in Mazatlán, only nine opened and three have already closed, since there was only work during the first two weeks of October.
“Only six freezers are working and we do not rule out that more will close in the following weeks, there is no product for the maquila,” she insisted.
