Has gentrification arrived in Mazatlán?

On social media, these comments began to emerge after it was revealed that the area’s hoteliers sought to ban traditional banda music due to the ‘nuisance’ it causes to foreign tourists.

“The biggest complaint we have at our hotel is the issue of noise, not only on the beach with the bands but also with all the bars and clubs and everything that is on the road that passes in front of us,” said Ben Berdejo, manager of the Double Three By Hilton hotel in Zona Dorada, in a video that sparked numerous criticisms.

To this hotelier was added Ernesto ‘Neto’ Coppel Kelly, who asked to ‘put in order’ the banda groups. He said they are a scandal and a disaster on the beaches.

“They don’t let people rest. I have complaints from hundreds of American tourists who tell me they will not return to Mazatlán because of the scandal and the noise,” assured the owner of the Pueblo Bonito hotel chain.

Later, the musical bands demonstrated to reach an agreement between the Municipality of Mazatlán and the two musicians’ unions, to establish a regulation during Holy Week 2024 so that the musical groups can play on the beach.
