The head of the State Civil Protection Institute, Roy Navarrete Cuevas, reported that only in 2023 there were 105 earthquakes

MAZATLÁN. – Did you know that our state, Sinaloa, is in a geographical position with high seismic activity? Although most of the seismic activity is recorded in the south of the country, however, Sinaloa is among the top 10 places with the most earthquakes, followed by Guerrero, Oaxaca, Michoacán and Colima.

The head of the State Civil Protection Institute, Roy Navarrete Cuevas, reported that only in 2023 there were 105 earthquakes with low Richter scales that went unnoticed by the citizens.

“Here in Sinaloa we are not exempt, although it is true that we are in a more firm geographical area than the south of our country, we must not lower our guard, we must do things better, especially in construction that they know that we are in a seismic zone of Sinaloa”.

So far in 2024 and according to the information of “Katrina” there have been no earthquakes in Sinaloa, but close to our territory, in total there are nine; the first was on January 3 of 4.0 at 113 kilometers from Sinaloa with epicenter at 135 kilometers northwest of San José del Cabo. The rest were recorded yesterday, the closest was an earthquake of 4.7 degrees Richter at 52 kilometers from the State of Sinaloa, with epicenter at 78 kilometers southwest of Huatabampo, Sonora.

In Los Mochis and El Fuerte, the strongest earthquakes

According to a study carried out, Héctor Enrique Rodríguez Lozoya, research professor at the Faculty of Engineering Culiacán of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (UAS) and member of the National System of Researchers, pointed out that Los Mochis and El Fuerte is a recurrent area, since it is in the Fire Belt.

He stressed that this is due to the fact that there is a phenomenon that causes the tectonic plates of North America and the Pacific to rub continuously, and when this friction force is greater, it overcomes the resistance producing earthquakes, which is known as transcurrent movements.

“It could be said that it is common, what is not common like this one of 4.8 that was close to the coasts, normally the seismicity occurs between the middle of what is the peninsula and what is the part of Los Mochis, let’s say it is something peculiar that this last earthquake has been presented more towards the coast”, he explains in his study.

According to the reports, the earthquakes of yesterday were:

1.- 4.7 degrees Ritcher at 52 km from the state of Sinaloa.

2.-4.7 degrees Ritcher at 127 km from the State of Sinaloa.

3.-4.1 degrees Ritcher at 125 km. from Sinaloa

4.- 4.4 degrees Ritcher at 129 km from the State.

5.- 4.4 degrees Ritcher at 126 km from Sinaloa.

6.- 4.6 degrees Ritcher at 139 km from Sinaloa

7.- 4.6 degrees Ritcher at 130 km from Sinaloa

8.- 4.6 degrees Ritcher at 131 km from Sinaloa.

The telluric movement kept the authorities of the state of Sinaloa, Sonora and Baja California Sur on alert, where the epicenters were recorded. So far, no damage caused by the earthquakes has been reported.
