MAZATLAN. – The Mexican writer David Toscana is the winner of the Mazatlán Literature Award 2023 and he was chosen for his work “The weight of living on earth”.

A book that makes a splendid journey through Russian literature and celebrates those brave writers who were free in a world that was not. He also proposes that, in the absence of a script, life allows itself to be possessed by the spirit of art.

David Toscana has been the winner, among other recognitions, of the Xavier Villaurutia Award, which is awarded by the community of writers to what it considers to be the best book published in Mexico that year.

Through a telephone call from Mazatlán to Moscow, Raúl Rico, director of Culture, and the writer Juan José Rodríguez, gave the news to Toscana.

Who is David Toscana?

The writer David Toscana is originally from Monterrey, Nuevo León, he began his career as a writer late. Before embarking on the path of letters, he graduated as an Industrial and Systems Engineer from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, ITESM, and later studied at the Sogem School of Writers.

His literary influences include the Spanish classics Cervantes and Calderón de la Barca, and the Spanish-American writers Juan Carlos Onetti, Jorge Luis Borges and José Donoso, as well as the Latin American fantastic tradition.

Presentation of the book

The writer will be presenting his book on February 10 at Casa Haas, one night before being awarded at the Evening of the Arts, whose ceremony will be held on February 11 at the Ángela Peralta Theater.

Upon being the winner, David Toscana will be the creditor of an important cash prize of 100,000 pesos, a prize that was financed by the Autonomous University of Sinaloa.
