Ministry of Health warns against the high level of obesity among children in Sinaloa

The large consumption of junk food, high in fats and carbohydrates, in addition to the lack of a balanced diet based on fruits and vegetables, not only put the health of adults at risk, but also of young children, since currently Sinaloa is third in the nation for obesity in children between 5 and 9 years of age.

Dr. Itzé Ángulo López, 2statal coordinator of the Nutrition in Childhood and Adolescence Component of the Ministry of Health, reported that obesity is a disease characterized by excess adipose tissue in the body, accompanied by metabolic alterations that increase the risk of developing comorbidities such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, as well as some neoplasms (tumors) in the breast, endometrium, colon and prostate, among others.

“Overweight or obesity in childhood is more frequent after 5 years of age, it has complex causes that involve biological, socioeconomic and cultural determinants. That is why the evaluation and monitoring of the nutritional status of girls and boys under the age of 10 is essential, it is a fundamental objective in the prevention of diseases to promote optimal growth and development of childhood. ”

He emphasized some of the recommendations such as: adopting a diet that maintains the stability of the weight or that promotes a gradual loss of it, and allows growth and normal development of the boy or girl.

Make small changes one at a time, such as limiting fast food consumption, eating foods low in fat and sugar; limit consumption of sugary drinks or reduce the usual portion sizes.

Encourage healthy eating patterns at home and school by offering healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat and low-dairy dairy.

He added that it is important to gradually increase physical activity; A plan is proposed that establishes the acquisition first in time, then intensity, of the daily exercise pattern and for one hour.

Also, motivate the whole family to promote the acquisition of new healthy eating habits as well as doing different physical activities and making the experience more pleasant.
