MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s president says he has given orders to recover the remains of 63 coal miners buried by an explosion 13 years ago.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador says retrieving the bodies from the Pasta de Conchos mine in the northern state of Coahuila is “an act of justice.”

The Feb. 19, 2006, explosion erupted as 73 miners were on duty. Eight survived with serious burns, and only two bodies were recovered.

Three consecutive governments opted not to try for the rest, saying it would be too dangerous and costly, with no guarantee of success. But victims’ relatives have continued to press authorities on the issue over the years.

López Obrador acknowledged on Wednesday May 1st, that it’s not clear how the recovery effort will proceed. He said that experts and specialists will be consulted.
