Andrés Manuel López Obrador wins Mexican presidential race

Mexico City. The leftist Andrés Manuel López Obrador (known as AMLO ) won the presidential elections in Mexico, according to an exit poll by Mitofsky that gives him between 43% and 49% of the votes, in elections marked by violence that left more of a hundred politicians brutally murdered in less than a year.

Some 20 points away, with between 27% and 23% of the votes, Ricardo Anaya of the conservative National Action Party (PAN) would be in second place and Jose Antonio Meade of the official Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) will be in the third position. with between 22% and 26% of the votes.

In a press conference, Meade acknowledged that the “tendencies do not favor” the PRI and wished López Obrador the “best of the successes.”

The polling stations began to close in most of Mexico at the end of a historic day that has developed relatively calmly.

After ten hours, the polling stations began to close at 6:00 pm local time (same time in Peru and 23:00 GMT) in the center and east of Mexico, and the closing will be done between one and two hours later in the western regions of the country, depending on the time zones.

Despite the official closing time, the National Electoral Institute (INE) indicated that the polls will stop receiving votes until the last person in the row exercises the vote.

The exit polls will be available at 8 pm and the first official bulletin will be released at 11 pm.

“This is a historic day,” AMLO told reporters before voting.

“We think that people will give us their support (…) will achieve this transformation without violence, in a peaceful way, it will be an orderly and at the same time profound change”, he added surrounded by his wife, his children and a cloud of journalists in an electoral center in the south of Mexico City.
