Mexico takes GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE in Biology Olympics

Mexican pride! The Mexican team selected from the National Biology Olympiad won a gold medal, with the highest score of the competition, a silver medal and two bronzes at the XIII Ibero-American Biology Olympiad that was held from 9 to 13 September in the city of Cochabamba, Bolivia.

The winning team that coordinates and organizes the Mexican Academy of Sciences (AMC), with support from the National Council of Science and Technology ( Conacyt ) is made up of the Neo-Leon Adrián Guadalupe Rodríguez Villarreal, who won the gold and Leonardo Uriel González Garza, winner of The silver medal

The two bronze medals went to Samuel Ruiz Pérez (from the State of Mexico) and Eduardo René Jiménez Castañeda (from Jalisco), who competed with students from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Peru, and Portugal.

The gold medal winner, Rodríguez Villarreal, a student who prepares to be a chemist, bacteriologist, parasitologist at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, said that this presentation is the result of much effort, support from teachers, advisors, family, and institutions like AMC and Conacyt who still believe in young people.

“I started to have contact with biology since I was in high school, I gradually got into it and in my first national competition, I got a bronze. I continued studying and reading and finally I got the gold in the 2018 Olympiad, with that I could be selected to represent the country. ”

Rodríguez Villarreal is proud to have been part of the team that represented Mexico, he likes cell biology and is sure he wants to devote himself to research “thanks to the Olympics.”

The researcher thanked the professors who participate in the preparation of young people, who after obtaining gold at the national level are advised by professors from the Faculty of Sciences of the UNAM, the Autonomous University of Mexico City and the Mexican Institute of Social Security.

The researcher recalled that in the 13 editions of the Ibero-American Biology Olympiad in which Mexico has participated, 9 gold medals, 14 silver medals, 26 bronze medals, and an honorable mention have been obtained.
