The Mazatlán Aquarium has quickly become one of the leading new tourist attractions not only in Mazatlán but throughout Mexico, as it is one of the most sought-after destinations for both domestic and international visitors.

Conceived as a space where conservation, education, and entertainment converge, the aquarium stands out not only for its infrastructure, its enormous ocean window, the surf zone, its mangroves, the stingray bay, and its jellyfish, but also for the vision behind its construction: to bring the public closer to the richness of the Sea of Cortez and promote a culture of environmental protection.

Among its main attributes are the size and diversity of its habitats, designed to represent emblematic ecosystems of northwestern Mexico.

These spaces allow for an immersive exploration of marine life, from coastal species to deep-sea fauna. But that’s not all; it also features a huge aviary, which, as a PIMVS (Protected Wildlife Management Unit), shelters hundreds of birds rescued from seizures or confiscations, as well as some terrestrial species.

The aquarium also stands out for integrating conservation and scientific outreach programs through the Ocean Research Center (CIO), whose main objective is to strengthen the educational and training initiatives of the Gran Acuario (Great Aquarium), emphasizing addressing the socio-environmental issues of the Gulf of California, a region with high biological value and a high diversity of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, declared a World Heritage Site in 2005.

In addition to its environmental value, the Gran Acuario promotes regional tourism by offering an interactive experience and family activities that complement Mazatlán’s appeal as a nature destination.

For all these reasons, the Gran Acuario Mazatlán is a unique space that reaffirms its commitment to the care of the seas and positions itself as a relevant center for environmental education.

How long does a visit to the Gran Acuario Mazatlán take?

The time spent visiting the Gran Acuario Mazatlán varies, but it is estimated that most people take between 90 minutes and two hours to see the main exhibits.
