During the last few weekends, traffic on the Durango-Mazatlán highway has decreased considerably, at least, the estimates of the State Public Security Secretariat refer to up to 50 percent fewer users, according to what was revealed by the head of the SSP, Oscar Galván Villarreal.
The decrease is related to the recent clashes and criminal acts that occurred in Sinaloa, which has caused many travelers to reconsider their destination, especially because the incidents and closures of toll booths have occurred during the weekends.
He pointed out that some tourists who planned to go to Sinaloa have chosen to stay in Durango and enjoy the local attractions, such as its cabins and other recreational spaces. Others have decided to return to their places of origin. However, there are those who have decided to continue their trip to Mazatlán, despite the reports of violence, due to the costs and efforts involved in their vacation plans.
Galván Villarreal reiterated that Durango has taken measures to strengthen its security and protect those who travel through the state, this includes constant collaboration with federal authorities such as the National Guard and SEDENA.
No meeting between authorities of Sinaloa and Durango has been held
Although the government of Durango has called for a meeting with the authorities of Sinaloa, there is still no set date for this to take place. According to information provided by the Secretary General of Government, Héctor Vela Valenzuela, both entities are working in a coordinated manner on security strategies.
Among these joint actions, strategic equipment has been provided on the Durango-Mazatlán highway, such as cranes, tanker trucks and cisterns. This is with the aim of acting quickly in case of blockades, guaranteeing the release of the roads in a short period of time, from two to three hours.
He also announced that next week a meeting of the Peace and Security Construction Roundtable will be held in Durango, in which the new Commander of the Third Military Region, whose headquarters are in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, will participate. The Governor of Durango, Esteban Villegas, will also be present at this meeting.
