In the first weeks of the summer vacation period, travel agencies report that despite the poor condition of the Durango-Mazatlán highway, the beaches of Sinaloa are still the most attractive and sought-after destination for Durango residents, with hotel occupancy levels of one hundred percent, reported the president of the civil association of Travel and Tourism Agencies in Durango, Héctor Zaragoza Solís.
Therefore, they trust that the authorities are working to guarantee security on the highway, not only in its physical condition, which has been a recurring social complaint in recent years due to its poor condition; but also regarding the issue of security, in view of the insecurity that could occur due to the arrest of drug trafficker Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
“We are confident that the federation will take into consideration a security strategy so that tourists from Cualiacán or Mazatlán continue to arrive in Durango and vice versa,” he commented.
And if the situation becomes complex and tourists from Durango or Sinaloa stop moving between both territories due to a security issue, nearly 80 travel agencies based in the state capital would be at risk.
He explained that the first tourist site that Durango residents looked for is Mazatlán; while Puerto Vallarta has had significant growth in the demand for vacation destinations and whose arrival is by land or air.
The increasing flow of tourists to the beaches of Jalisco has forced the construction of a stretch of road that guarantees that tourists arrive at Puerto Vallarta in less time, which will cause the activation of the Durango residents to this destination, which has an important tourist offer of up to 15 or 20 percent less than that offered by Mazatlán.
This will open up the possibilities in tourist offers for the Durango residents, however they insist that the airlines must do their part and reduce the cost of flights to destinations such as Quintana Roo.

Likewise, the people of Mazatlán look for the mountains of Durango as an option for vacations, since even companies established in Mazatlán have contracted complete services for events that take place in ecotourism complexes such as Mexiquillo.
“The people of Mazatlán like Durango because of the diversity there, they are fed up with the beach and look for a colonial city, the film theme, the mountains”; commented Héctor Zaragoza Solís, asking the authorities to ensure that the roads are in better condition, not only physically, but also in terms of safety.
