Tourist dies after being swept away by the current in Mazatlan

A tourist from Navojoa, Sonora, who was rescued by members of the Mazatlán Aquatic Squadron after being pulled out to sea by a strong rip current on the beach of Avenida del Mar, died shortly after receiving first aid from the Red Cross.

The new incident took place just seven days after thirteen visitors from the states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Jalisco and Nuevo León were rescued on various beaches in the port, due to the effects of the swell phenomenon.

Regarding the new accident, it was reported that a family from the state of Sonora on their visit to the beach of Avenida del Mar, noticed that Mr. Jesús Manuel “N”, 60 years old, who went in to bathe, suddenly moved away from the shore, pulled by a rip current.

The Aquatic Rescue Squad members were notified of what was happening, so they jumped into the sea to help him, and managed to get him to dry land, where he received first aid and was taken to the Red Cross, where he died shortly after.

On Thursday, July 18, it was announced that in various rescues on different beaches in Mazatlán, help was provided to a total of thirteen national tourists who were surprised by the swell phenomenon, whose waves pushed them away from the shore.

Public safety authorities reported that four visitors, from the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León, had to be rescued by lifeguards from one of the hotels, as they were pulled further inland by a rip current.

Gustavo Espinoza Bastidas, Coordinator of the Aquatic Rescue Squadron, commented that the tourists from Nuevo León, Mario Alberto “N”, 53 years old, Gabriela “N”, 50, Natalia “N”, 21, and the teenager Mario “N”, only presented fatigue and nervous problems, without meriting hospitalization.
