Light Rail in Mazatlán? This is the Project Mazatlecos Have Dreamed of for Years

A project that promises to improve the port’s mobility would have three lines along the main avenues, covering practically the entire city.

Mazatlán, one of Mexico’s most important tourist ports, is experiencing constant urban growth with significant infrastructure development, new houses, apartments, hotels, and a notable increase in the construction of streets, avenues, and roads that transform mobility throughout the city.

An innovative proposal has emerged on social media for years: the implementation of a mass transportation system that could change the city’s dynamics.

A few years ago, the idea of establishing a Light Rail, Trolleybus, or Metrobus was proposed, which would be powered by electric or solar energy. This transportation system would not only modernize urban infrastructure but also provide a quick and efficient solution to mobility problems, especially in a rapidly growing city like Mazatlán.

The proposal includes three main lines for this new transportation system:

  • Line 1: From La Puntilla to Cerritos, covering the entire Malecón with an elevated passage over the Marina.
  • Line 2: From Clouthier Avenue to the Multipurpose Center, along Libramiento II.
  • Line 3: From La Puntilla to the Football Stadium, along Juan Pablo II and Munich Avenue.

These routes would cover the most frequented areas of the city and facilitate access for both locals and visitors.

Additionally, the project includes an accessible fare scheme for all citizens. It is estimated that the ticket cost would be higher than in Mexico City, possibly between 10 and 15 pesos, without the need to pay again in case of transfers between lines at the main connections: La Puntilla Station, Ernesto Coppel Station, and Mazatlán F.C. Station.

Another option considered is to charge according to the distance traveled, implementing a smart card and turnstiles system, similar to the CDMX-Edo. Mexico Suburban Train system.

This project promised to improve mobility in Mazatlán, contribute to pollution reduction, and promote a sustainable transportation system.
